How did you learn to swim?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for March 15, 2009:

I was five years old. My family was renting a lakeside cabin. My stepfather took my sisters and I out to a floating deck some 30 or 40 feet from the shore and we all got up on it. He then proceeded to throw me in. That was how I learned to swim. Oddly enough, I'm not afraid of the water and I'm a pretty good swimmer in spite of the terrifying way I began.
